Analog Discovery 3 Overview

The Digilent Analog Discovery 3 (AD3), equipped with Texas Instruments circuitry, is a versatile test and measurement tool that enables users to interact with mixed signal circuits in various ways. Despite its compact size and affordability, it's powerful enough to replace a range of lab equipment, making it an invaluable resource for engineering students, hobbyists, and electronics enthusiasts. It allows them to work with analog and digital circuits in any setting, not just the lab.

The AD3 serves multiple functions, including a digital oscilloscope, logic analyzer, waveform generator, and pattern generator. With the help of the adaptable WaveForms software, compatible with Windows, Mac, and Linux, the AD3 can be utilized anywhere - at home, in the field, or in the lab, freeing users from the constraints of traditional benchtops and costly test instruments.

Maintaining the portability of its predecessor, the AD3 is a lightweight, pocket-sized, USB-powered test and measurement tool. It now features an upgraded USB-C connection, making it an excellent companion for engineers on the go.

The AD3 boasts an expanded buffer size, facilitating the transmission of more data through the waveform generator and reception through the mixed signal oscilloscope. It also offers an increased sampling rate of up to 125 MS/s on all channels and a stronger power supply (up to 800 mA). These larger buffers enable the capture of longer records at high resolution and the generation of more complex AWG signals. More intricate modulated signals, including phase modulation and summation, can also benefit from these larger buffers.

This version of Digilent's popular Analog Discovery digital oscilloscope introduces new powerful features in WaveForms, such as the FIR (finite impulse response) Filter. Users can apply optional FIR filters on Oscilloscope input channels to minimize high-frequency noise that could compromise their measurements. The AD3 now supports digital loopback of captured signals to the AWG, both filtered and unfiltered. AWG output signals can also be recaptured through digital loopback and displayed alongside signals returned from a circuit under test.

Built on the next-generation Xilinx FPGA, the AD3 promises even more features and future enhancements with software updates over time.
